Gilded by Marissa Meyer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Is anything better than a twisted fairy tale?
Ms. Meyer handles this version of “Rumplestiltskin” beautifully. You know – or THINK you know – the various elements of the tale, keeping things comfortable. Then it makes a sudden sharp corner that throws you into a new story entirely. It’s an insanely beautiful blend of the familiar and new that weaves together into a glorious tapestry.
Of course, the book contains the usual elements of a fairy tale one expects. You know Serilda’s gifts are more than they appear. (No fault to Ms. Meyer, but I saw the direction of that coming from the first tale) And she holds to the original gruesome pattern the Grimms Brothers established – something not every author is willing to tackle. It’s heartbreaking and tragic, but more – realistic seems an odd word to use in this case, but it works.
Now comes the agony of waiting for the next book to appear. (And my thanks to Goodreads for pointing out this WAS the first of a series? Duology? Who’s to say. Wouldn’t have known otherwise!)
